A testing center has opened in Seoul where foreigners can take the preliminary and comprehensive evaluations of the social integration program, which is essential for staying in Korea.
The testing center, which used to be located in only two places - Gwangmyeong-si in Gyeonggi=do and Daejeon-si - has been opened in Seoul, which is expected to greatly increase convenience for not only foreigners living in Seoul but also foreign residents living in the northern and eastern regions of Gyeonggi-do.
On December 30, the Ministry of Justice and the Korea Immigration Service held an opening ceremony for the Seoul Computer Based Test Center, a social integration program to assess immigrants’ basic skills, including Korean language proficiency and understanding of Korean culture.
The Seoul Computer Evaluation Center, located on the 12th floor of Baeksang Building, 12 Insa-dong 7-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, is a computer-based testing center where you can always take the Ministry of Justice’s Social Integration Program pre-evaluation and comprehensive evaluation, which grants benefits when foreigners apply for residence permits, permanent residency, and citizenship.
The pre-evaluation is a test that measures the educational level assignment and understanding of Korean language and culture of foreigners who wish to participate in the social integration program.
The comprehensive evaluation is a test that measures whether the applicant for naturalization has sufficient basic knowledge of Korean language, Korean culture, and understanding of Korean society.
The newly opened Seoul Center is the third computer-based assessment center to be established nationwide, following the Gwangmyeong Center in March 2022 and the Daejeon Center in November 2023. It is expected to be welcomed by foreign residents due to its excellent transportation accessibility.
In particular, with the opening of the Seoul Center, not only program participants living in the metropolitan area, such as Seoul and Gyeonggi, but also those living in the provinces can conveniently participate in the evaluation according to their desired schedule. Bae Sang-eop, head of the Immigration Bureau, said, “In 2009, the first year of the social integration program, there were only about 1,300 participants, but this year, the number has surpassed 70,000, making it a very important educational program for immigrants to settle into Korean society.” He added, “We will build various infrastructures so that participants can receive social integration education and evaluation more conveniently.”
