Gwangju Metropolitan City will hold the
2021 Gwangju Fringe Festival Square-type performance in the May 18th Democracy
Plaza from November 12 to 14. Fringe Festival refers to an art performance
festival that is held freely without being bound by a fixed frame such as genre
or form.
Gwangju Fringe Festival, which had been
held online due to the COVID-19 pandemic and limited number of people, has been
reorganized to maintain distance in accordance with the gradual recovery of
daily life, so it will be held as an on-site performance.
The concert, which has been conducted in
10 separate sessions, touring each autonomous district since last July, will
mark the end of the show.
On the 12th, the first day, jazz and
orchestra performances await the audience, starting with the dance that
expresses the four seasons of Gwangju by the ‘Gwangju Root Dance Company’. The
Gwangju-Jeonnam Culture Week Jazz Festival continues, and a total of five jazz
band performances will be performed at the May 18th Democracy Plaza as an
emotional performance to color the autumn night.
The second day, the 13th, will be held
simultaneously on the rooftop of the Jeonil Building, the stairs of the Asia
Culture Center, and the May 18th Democracy Plaza. Busking performances by local
performance groups are available on the roof of Jeonil Building, and
performance-type performances such as performances, magic balloons, and comedy
are prepared on the stairs of the Asia Culture Center.
On the 13th, at the main stage of May 18
Democracy Plaza, Korea's representative street dancers Jay Black and Lee
Bong-geun, who appeared in MBN Chosun Panstar, will perform together with the
jazz band Jeokbyeok present a performance.
On the 14th, the last day, Samulnori of
the Traditional Percussion Research Association and Yeonhuigut of Golleongso, a
traditional performing arts troupe, will be held.
Small theater plays will be held at 6
locations around the Asia Culture Center from the 10th to the 16th, and will
include plays such as Macbeth, The Old Man and the Sea, Yuhon, Goblin's Bat,
Two Pieces of Magic Sugar, 'Oh! Geumnam Restaurant', historical plays, family
plays, and children's and family musicals. Various genres of programs are
available. Admission is free and reservations can be made by phone or on-site
from the 8th.
In addition, attractions, flea markets,
and experience programs of 'BIG-FOOT', a media art exhibition in the Asia
Culture Center area, will fill the Fringe Festival more abundantly.
Kim Jun-young, head of the city's culture,
tourism and sports office, said, "This square-type fringe festival will
provide an opportunity to heal citizens who are tired of Corona 19 with culture
and art under the theme of 'Transforming the Earth, Breathing Fringe'." I
hope that many people in the city will enjoy the street art festival.”
Meanwhile, the square-type Fringe Festival will provide vaccination completion and gene amplification tests (PCR) for all participants, and visitors will be able to watch less than 500 people on a first-come, first-served basis according to the government's quarantine guidelines and will be broadcast live on the Gwangju Fringe Festival YouTube channel.
