‘Medi City Daegu Global Medical Special
Zone’, promoted by the city of Daegu to enhance its status as a global medical
tourism city, has gained strength by being selected as a special regional
development zone by the government.
Daegu City will invest a total of 15.9 billion won by
2025 to promote the Medi-City Daegu Global Medical Special Zone project, and
put all its capabilities into a new leap forward in the medical tourism
industry, which has been stagnant due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Daegu City, through the designation of a special
medical zone, has 6 specialized businesses including Daegu City, Jung-gu, and
Suseong-gu, centering around Jung-gu (Dongseong-ro, Banwoldang) and Suseong-gu
(Beomeo Intersection, Suseong University), where hospitals registered as
institutions for attracting foreign patients are concentrated. Four specialized
projects (16 sub-projects) will be promoted: creating a foundation for
attracting foreign patients linked to the 4th industry ▲
marketing and revitalization of foreign patients attraction ▲
Medi-City Daegu medical service industry development ▲
establishment of a base for attracting serious disease and silver medical
tourists.
In addition, special cases will be applied to the
regulations of five laws, including the extension of the period of stay of
overseas experts (Immigration Control Act) and the priority examination of
patents related to medical tourism (Patent Act), which is expected to
contribute to strengthening the basis for attracting foreign patients.
The city of Daegu creates synergy effects across the
medical industry by promoting specialized projects, improves the image of
medical tourism and medical services in response to changes in the 4th
industry, and expects a large economic ripple effect such as local income of
KRW 167.3 billion and job creation of 3,531 people.
Meanwhile, Daegu City has been growing steadily since
2009, when the attraction of foreign patients began, surpassing 30,000 medical
tourists for the first time in a non-metropolitan area in 2019.
