Chungcheongnam-do Governor Yang Seung-jo said that he would seriously consider the installation of a foreigner community center.
At the 335th plenary session on March 16th, Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Assembly Assemblyman Lee Seon-young (Justice Party) proposed the establishment of a dedicated department for foreign residents.
Rep. Lee said, "Article 17 of the Local Autonomy Act states that foreigners have the same right to receive administrative benefits as Koreans, but Chungcheongnam-do does not seem to be able to distinguish between foreign residents and multicultural families. Please separate the multicultural family business from the business for foreigners and set up a dedicated department for foreign residents," she demanded.
Rep. Lee Seon-young also cited the foreign Koryoin as an example and said, “Chungnam is home to about 12,000 Koryoin, the second largest after Gyeonggi-do. Children of Goryeoin Koreans often enter the country midway, so support for childcare should start from the beginning so that they can overcome the language barrier. She urged the local government to take the lead.”
Governor Yang Seung-jo, who responded to this, said, "I will seriously review the issue of installing a foreigner community center. However, this does not mean that public officials cannot distinguish between foreign residents and multicultural families,” he said. "As the number of foreign residents is increasing, we will pay attention and take care of them so that they can be granted equal rights to Koreans," he said.
Regarding the issue of children of Korean compatriots, Governor Yang Seung-jo said, “I completely agree. We will come up with several solutions,” he promised.
