Abolition of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, what about multicultural policy?
The government has confirmed a plan to reorganize the government organization with the main goal of abolishing the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and establishing the Office of Overseas Koreans.
The Ministry of Interior and Safety held a briefing at the government complex in Seoul on October 6th and announced the government reorganizing plan.
The core of the announcement is that the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family will be abolished, and the main tasks of youth and family, multiculturalism, and women's policies will be transferred to the Ministry of Health and Welfare.
In particular, it was decided to establish the ‘Population and Family Gender Equality Headquarters’ as an organization that oversees life cycle policies, gender equality, and rights and interests promotion functions. The female employment function is transferred to the Ministry of Employment and Labor in order to provide integrated employment support.
Multicultural policies will also be transferred to the Population and Family Gender Equality Headquarters, and it is expected that departments such as the ‘Multicultural Policy Department’ will be created in this headquarters.
Establishment of Overseas Koreans Office, Support for Chinese and Golyeoins?
Another thing that stands out in this government reorganization is the establishment of the Office of Overseas Koreans under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A dedicated body will be established to take charge of the policy of 7.32 million Koreans living abroad.
The Office of Overseas Koreans will integrate the functions of the Overseas Koreans Policy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the business functions of the Overseas Koreans Foundation.
However, the purpose of the Overseas Koreans Office is to support overseas Koreans who once lived in Korea and then left abroad.
It is concerned how well they will implement policies for Chinese compatriots and Golyeoins who came to Korea after living in China and Russia after the Japanese colonial period. They are the same compatriots, but completely different personalities.
The establishment of the immigration office, which was originally discussed, was omitted from this reorganization plan. It's a shame.
