Asan City is operating four family centers that support multicultural families and foreign residents.

Local governments, which have a much larger foreign population than Asan City, operate at most two affiliated family centers. However, Asan City has established four main offices and branches to support 31,817 foreign residents (as of November 2020).

Center 1 (Multicultural Education Center, 29 Sijang-gil) provides Korean language education, parent education, and interpretation and translation support. Center 2 (Foreigner Learning Center, Onyang Oncheon Station 1st floor) provides a foreign language learning center for immigrant children, as well as for global talent development training center, operating youth job search and speech therapy programs

Center 2's immigrant children's program is getting a good response with Korean language education to improve students' adaptability to school and a curriculum using various teaching tools. It provides 1:1 mentoring with local college students to help them learn and adapt to life in Korea.

Employment and start-up programs for marriage immigrants are also popular. Through cafe practice, global cook-bang, and training courses for organizing and storing experts, it is helping immigrant women become economically independent.

Center 3 (Global Family Center, near City Hall) operates support programs for YouTube creators such as job start-up programs for multicultural families, cooking classes and cook-bang.

The Urban Forest Cafe in Center 3 is also used as a place to create jobs and practice, and it is serving as sarangbang for marriage immigrants. It supports cultural arts club activities such as chorus and dance, and it is developing the pride of immigrants as a member of the local community by participating in local events as well as hobbies.

Center 4, which opened in Sinchang-myeon in 2019, is operating Korean language education and after-school classes.

5 center to be installed surprisingly

Starting with Shinchang-myeon, where the proportion of foreigners residing in Asan is high, and the city of Asan has dispatched Russian-language interpreters to the Administrative Welfare Center to help those who are not fluent in Korean to use civil service services.

In Shinchang-myeon, 80% of foreigners living in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Koreans (Goryeo) speak Russian.

In addition, a volunteer interpreter group for foreigners in five languages is deployed in the civil affairs office of Asan City Hall to support the use of civil service.

Especially, Asan City plans to additionally install a family center branch in Dunpo in the second half of this year.

Dunpo has the second largest number of foreign residents in Asan, but many people have difficulties in using it due to the lack of accessibility to the existing center.

Lee Mi-kyung, head of the Asan City Hall’s Foreign Living Support Team, said, “Based on the Family Center, Asan City is implementing various customized support policies to help multicultural families and foreign residents settle down in a stable manner and adapt to social life. We are operating 4 centers to improve accessibility of foreign residents and to meet the needs of the program users.”
