Jangsu-gun, Jeollanam-do is taking the lead in preparing support policy to solve the problem of labor shortages caused by COVID-19 among farmers in the province.
In July, Jangsu-gun invited 39 foreign seasonal workers, consisting of married immigrant women from their home countries, and placed them in 23 farmhouses within the province after the procedures of testing and quarantine for COVID-19.
In the next five months, their labors will be added to farmers in Jangsu-gun that produce tomatoes, watermelons, peppers, and lettuce, etc. Jangsu-gun expects that the family of eight marriage immigrants, who will be assigned to four farms, are expected to enter the country in August, so it is expected that the worries of labor will be decreased
Jangsu-gun is planning to ensure the rights and interests of foreign seasonal workers who are employed in agricultural work sites, and will be fully preparing to make sure that workers do not leave without permission. Also Jangsu-gun is striving to create a stable working environment by subsidizing occupational health and safety insurance to decrease the burden on employed farmers.
A farmhouse that employed foreign seasonal workers said, “The harvest time was short, so I needed a lot of labor as soon as possible. It was fortunate that crop work was done in a timely manner with this support of the foreign seasonal workers”
