More than half (55.8%) of foreigners who own land in Korea were Koreans with foreign nationality. It was found that only 9.9% of land was owned by foreigners.
On May 31, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced statistics on foreign land and housing ownership.
According to this announcement, the number of domestic houses (apartment houses and detached houses) owned by foreigners was 83,512 households, which was 0.4% of all domestic houses (8.95 million households).
Of the 76,334 foreigners (93.5%) who own houses in Korea, there were 1 homeowners, 4121 (5.1%) owners of 2 houses, and 1171 (1.4%) owners of 3 or more houses.
By nationality, Chinese-owned houses accounted for 53.8% (44,889 households) of all foreign-owned houses, followed by Americans with 19,923 households (23.8%), Canadians with 5810 households (6.95%), Taiwanese with 3271 households (3.91%), and Australians. 1740 households (2.08%) followed.
Foreign-owned houses were concentrated in the metropolitan area.
73.6% (61,498 households) of nationwide housing were located in the metropolitan area, followed by 31,582 households in Gyeonggi-do (37.8%), 21,882 households in Seoul (26.2%), and 8034 households in Incheon (9.6%).
Land ownership is mostly compatriots
Looking at the area owned by land other than housing, the area of land owned by foreigners last year was 264.01 million square meters, accounting for 0.26% of the total land area. Compared to the end of 2021, it increased by 1.8% (4.6 million square meters).
More than half (55.8%) of foreigners owning land were Koreans with foreign nationality, and only 9.9% were foreigners. It was found that foreign corporations owned 34.1%, and the government and organizations owned 0.2% each.
As can be seen in this case, I hope there will be no misunderstandings such as foreigners speculating in real estate in Korea. Koreans are investing more in real estate overseas.
