The Korean police have decided to launch an intensive crackdown on international crime offenders.
The National Police Agency announced that it would carry out an “intensive crackdown on international crimes” for three months from April 3rd to July 2nd.
The areas to be focused on this time include ▲specialized crimes that are the main targets of investigation by the International Crime Investigation Team of the Metropolitan Police Agency, such as immigration offenders and illegal foreign exchange transactions ▲various general crimes by foreigners residing in Korea, such as robbery, violence, investment fraud, and gambling ▲organized crimes such as criminal groups and group formations.
According to the 'status of foreigners living in the past 5 years' collected by the Ministry of Justice and the National Police Agency, the number of illegal immigrants decreased from 390,281 in 2019 to 392,196 in 2020 and 388,700 in 2021, and increased sharply to 411,270 last year.
In addition, the number of foreign suspects under investigation by the police for criminal charges also decreased from 39,249 in 2019 to 32,470 in 2021, then increased to 34,511 last year.
Recently, 41 foreigners were arrested in Gyeongsangnam-do for smuggling drugs by international mail and distributing them to foreign workers, in Gyeonggi-do, 93 people, including foreigners, were arrested for renting a vinyl house and operating an illegal gambling center worth 12 billion won.
