On September 11, the Korean Ministry of Education announced the ‘2024 Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) Implementation Plan’ including the operation method and detailed schedule of the Test of Proficiency in Korean.

The biggest change in next year's implementation plan is the expansion of the number of overseas tests, which will increase from 4 this year to 8 next year.

In particular, starting next year, the Reading, Listening, and Writing evaluations (TOPIK·) of the Test of Proficiency in Korean will be conducted 6 times as a paper-based test (PBT) and 3 times as an Internet-based test (IBT). We decided to implement it 9 times. Additionally, the speaking evaluation introduced last year to strengthen the evaluation of Korean communication skills is conducted three times as an internet-based test.

It is said that the paper-based test (PBT) will gradually expand to more than 90 countries and the Internet-based test (IBT) will gradually expand to 10 countries.

The increase in the number of overseas tests is a follow-up measure to the 'Study Korea 300K Project' announced in August. The improvement was made in response to field opinions that the number of overseas tests is insufficient despite the increasing demand for the Korean Language Proficiency Test.

The Korean Language Proficiency Test has been implemented since 1997 to evaluate the Korean language proficiency of overseas Koreans and foreigners, and is currently systematically operated by the National Institute for International Education. In addition, the number of applicants continues to increase as interest in Korea and the Korean language grows, with the number of applicants exceeding 400,000 for the first time this year.

An official from the Ministry of Education said, “We will significantly expand overseas exams, especially in countries where demand for studying abroad is increasing, such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and India, and take thorough measures to ensure that students who want to study abroad do not have problems entering Korean universities.” He emphasized, “We will prepare the digital-based reform of the Korean Language Proficiency Test without a hitch so that you can easily learn Korean anywhere in the world.”
