The Ministry of Education has decided to strengthen the educational welfare of low-income families by increasing education benefits in 2024 by about 11% compared to this year.

Education benefit is one of the basic livelihood security benefits under the National Basic Livelihood Security Act and is a welfare system that supports education expenses for elementary, middle, and high school students from households whose recognized income is less than 50% of the median income. It is expected that next year, the standard median income will be raised to the highest level ever, allowing more low-income students to receive education benefits.

The income of households eligible to receive education benefits is 2-person household 1,841,305 won 3-person household 2,357,329 won 4-person household 2,864,957 won 5-person household 3,347,868 won 6-person household 3,809,185 won This is the case below. Multicultural families can also receive education benefits if they meet these criteria.

In order to reduce education costs and ensure educational opportunities for low-income households, the Ministry of Education plans to increase next year's education benefits by an average of 11% compared to this year, providing annual support of 461,000 won to elementary school students, 654,000 won to middle school students, and 727,000 won to high school students.

If a student who receives education benefits attends a high school that is excluded from free education, such as an independent high school or a special purpose high school, the admission fee, tuition, and textbook costs are fully subsidized.

If your income is below the above amount but you are not yet receiving education benefits, you can apply for education benefits through your local community center or Bokjiro (www.bokjiro.go.kr).

Details of the selection criteria for next year's education benefits and partial revisions to the minimum guarantee level can be found on the Ministry of Education's website (www.moe.go.kr, information disclosure - legal information - legislation and administrative notice).

An official from the Ministry of Education said, “We will continue to provide stronger and more thorough support to low-income students to ensure that the income gap does not lead to an education gap.”
