The Ministry of Education and the Korea Scholarship Foundation announced that they will expand and implement the scale of the multicultural and North Korean defector student mentoring project this year in order to build an educational environment in which multicultural students and North Korean defector students, which are increasing every year, can grow stably.
*What is a mentoring business? : The multicultural and North Korean defector student mentoring project is a national scholarship work-study project in which college students become mentors to multicultural and North Korean defector students, study with them, guide them to grow properly, and receive scholarships.
*What activities do you do? : We do a variety of activities, including ▲basic learning guidance (English, math, etc.) ▲Korean learning guidance ▲school life and career counseling, play learning ▲Korean culture experience, and other activities to adapt to life in Korea.
*Scholarship increase: We are increasing scholarships so that college (graduate) students can actively participate and reduce the burden of tuition through mentoring activities. You can get 13,500 won per hour in urban areas and 16,500 won per hour in rural areas. College students who actively participate in mentoring activities can earn approximately 1 million won per month.
*Advantage to student with a migration background : The Ministry of Education recommends the following as priority selection criteria for participation in multicultural mentoring: ▲ those who can speak a foreign language ▲ those who have experience in multicultural exchange in elementary, middle, and high schools ▲ applicants from rural areas ▲ those who have completed multicultural education ▲ participants in the previous year's project. Students with immigrant backgrounds who become college students have an advantage.
*How do I become a mentor? : This project is basically being implemented in 80 universities across the country. Therefore, it is easy for a student at that university to become a mentor. You can become a mentor even if the university you attend does not participate in this project. You can apply for participation in the project on the Korea Scholarship Foundation website and submit a self-introduction and professor recommendation letter.
*Full participation in family centers: The Ministry of Education has cooperated with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family to enable family centers to participate as active organizations so that mentors and mentees can provide mentoring in more locations. Multicultural families who want their children to participate in the mentoring program can contact the family center or the university where the project is implemented. It looks like they will be recruiting in March.
*Mentoring period: We decided to implement the project earlier than last year so that multicultural and North Korean defector students can receive educational support through mentoring, starting in March, when the semester begins. This year’s project will run from March to February next year.
Detailed information regarding the selection of mentors and mentees for the multicultural and North Korean defector student mentoring project can be found on the Korea Scholarship Foundation website (https://www.kosaf.go.kr).
