The number of foreign drug offenders arrested by the Korean police from January to May of this year was 715, of which 422, or 59%, were found to be illegal aliens. In particular, the proportion of illegal immigrants among foreign drug offenders is increasing every year.
According to data submitted by the National Police Agency by Vice Chairman Jung Woo-taek of the National Assembly, the number of foreign drug offenders increased by 194.8% from 596 in 2018 to 1,757 last year.
In particular, the proportion of illegal aliens among foreign drug offenders continues to increase, with 28.9% (172 persons) in 2018, 47.5% (697 persons) in 2020, and 53.8% (945 persons) in 2022.
By nationality, Thais were the most common. Of the 3,400 illegal foreign drug offenders arrested from 2018 to May of this year, 2543, or 74.8%, were of Thai nationality.
Next came Vietnam with 440, China with 160, Russia with 50, Uzbekistan with 48, Kazakhstan with 39, Cambodia with 34, the Philippines with six, and the United States with five.
Rep. Jung Woo-taek said, “The increasing trend of foreign drug offenders is serious and there is a high risk that it will spread to local residents.” “The Commissioner General of the National Police Agency needs to take all-out measures to cut off and root out the international distribution network, including clearing up illegal drug criminals,”
In Korea, drug crimes have been severely punished from the past. This is because it is judged that the adverse effects of drugs on society and individuals are very large.
Therefore, foreigners who come to Korea should never touch drugs in Korea, even if they think of taking drugs loosely in their home country.
