Last year, as COVID-19 subsided, multicultural marriages showed the largest increase. However, the number of children born to multicultural families continued to decline significantly as the impact of the decline in marriages during the spread of COVID-19 continued.
Multicultural marriage
According to the ‘2022 Multicultural Population Dynamics Statistics’ released by Statistics Korea on November 29, the number of multicultural marriages last year was 17,428, an increase of 3,502 (25.1%) from the previous year. This is the largest increase since 2008. However, it is low compared to the 24,700 cases in 2019, just before the coronavirus.
Multicultural marriages, which showed an increase every year from 2017 to 2019, decreased from 2020 to 2021 due to the impact of COVID-19. Marriages between Korean husbands and foreign wives accounted for 66.8%, and marriages between Korean wives and foreign husbands accounted for 20.0%.
The majority of Korean husbands in multicultural marriages were over 45 years old (31.2%), followed by early 30s (19.3%) and late 30s (17.1%). The age difference between couples was the largest in couples where the husband was 10 years or more older (35.0%). The most common nationality of foreign wives was Vietnam at 23.0%, followed by China (17.8%) and Thailand (11.1%). The most common nationality of foreign husbands was the United States at 8.0%, followed by China (6.5%) and Vietnam (3.4%).
Multicultural divorce
Last year, there were 7,853 multicultural divorces, a decrease of 571 cases (6.8%) from the previous year. However, the proportion of multicultural divorces among all divorces was 8.4%, an increase of 0.1% from the previous year.
The average age of divorced Korean husbands was 50.1 years, and the average age of Korean wives was 41.3 years.
Among divorced multicultural couples, the majority of marriages lasted less than 5 years (31.8%). However, the average length of marriage for multicultural divorced couples was 10 years, an increase compared to the previous year.
The nationality of divorced foreign husbands and wives was Chinese, accounting for 13.0% and 33.8%, respectively. I think there are a lot of divorces because there are the most multicultural couples of Chinese nationality.
Multicultural baby
Last year, the number of multicultural babies was 12,526, a decrease of 1,796 (12.5%) from the previous year.
The number of multicultural births decreased by 8.5% and 12.8% in 2020 and 2021, respectively, as the number of multicultural marriages decreased due to the spread of COVID-19.
Although the number of multicultural marriages rebounded last year, Statistics Korea analyzed that the number of births continued to decline due to the decrease in the number of multicultural couples during the spread of COVID-19.
However, we must be aware of the fact that married immigrant women living in Korea are also influenced by the Korean women around them and the social atmosphere, so their birth rate is not as high as it was in the past.
