Foreign residents are well aware that the low birth rate and aging population are very serious in Korea, right?
On July 11th, ‘Population Day’, the National Statistical Office announced statistics on Korea’s low birth rate and prospects for social changes.
According to these statistics, the population of Korea is expected to decrease from 52 million in 2023 to 40 million in 2041 and to 38 million in 2070. Therefore, the role of foreigners in Korea will become bigger and more important.
The Korean government is also promoting policies to enhance the roles of women and foreigners to expand the economically active population. Among the statistics announced this time, I will introduce the current situation related to foreigners.
Foreigner statistics
The Korea National Statistical Office predicted that the proportion of foreigners in the total population would increase from 3.2% 1.64 million in 2023 to 4.3% 2.16 million in 2040.
Looking at the economic activities of foreigners, wage workers accounted for 94.0% of foreign workers in 2022, and mining and manufacturing accounted for the highest share of workers by industry at 43.9%.
Multicultural households centered on marriage migrant women accounted for 1.7% of all households in Korea in 2021, but multicultural households accounted for 2.2% of all households. The increasing trend is expected to continue.
As for the degree of acceptance of foreigners by Koreans, the degree of acceptance of foreigners as Korean citizens in 2022 was 5.3 points (based on 10 points, the higher the acceptance rate), and the rate of acceptance as co-workers (42.3%) was the highest. Next came neighbors (29.8%) and friends (16.6%). Unacceptable also accounted for 10%.
Compared to 2016, there is no big difference in the acceptance rate of foreigners by Koreans. However, it is estimated that the interest and need for foreign manpower has increased in 2023 this year after the corona, and the acceptance rate of foreigners has further improved.
