With the number of foreigners residing in Korea exceeding 1.4 million, it was found that many foreigners are unable to reside with their families and are living separately. According to the '2023 Immigrant Status and Employment Survey Results' announced by Statistics Korea on December 18, of the 831,000 foreigners with a spouse as of last May, 543,000 (65.3%) lived in Korea with their spouse. ) was. The number of people who cannot live together because their spouse is overseas reached 263,000 (31.7%). In the case of children, family separation was even more severe. Among the 801,000 foreigners with children, 411,000 (51.2%) had all of their children living in Korea. There were 324,000 people (40.4%) who could not live with their children because they were all overseas.

This phenomenon of family separation is because Korea adheres to a strict visa policy and does not allow family members to accompany each other.

Even in cases where family members are allowed, spouses are often not allowed to work, so many people end up returning to their home country because they cannot afford living expenses.

When we asked them how they would continue to stay in Korea, the answers were extending the period of stay (52.8%), obtaining permanent residency status (16.4%), and acquiring Korean nationality (10.3%).
