The Korean government has finalized a plan to prevent foreign dependents from free riding in health insurance.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare has changed it so that foreign dependents of Korean employer-subscribers can receive health insurance dependent benefits only six months after entering Korea in order to prevent cases where foreign dependents receive expensive medical treatment immediately after entry.
Previously, the foreign father-in-law of the Korean son-in-law was listed as a dependent of the son-in-law's health insurance right after entering Korea and was able to receive health insurance benefits. As a result, it was possible for a foreigner to receive expensive medical benefits immediately after coming to Korea after suffering from cancer abroad.
However, as an exception, spouses and minor children were allowed to acquire qualifications immediately after entering the country as is currently the case.
