A “foreign worker dormitory” will be built
in Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do to secure stable rural employment.
According to Gochang-gun, it was recently
selected for the “village joint-type foreign worker dormitory construction
project” hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, and
secured a total project cost of 1.5 billion won.
The dormitory for foreign workers has been
promoted to solve the manpower shortage in rural areas suffering from lack of
labor, to improve the poor residential environment of foreign workers in rural
areas, and to protect human rights through legalized facilities.
Gochang-gun will build a dormitory in
Jangsan-ri, Sangha-myeon, where 50 people can live by next year, with guest
rooms, rest rooms, and convenient facilities.
The plan is reported to secure a place for
foreign workers to live and to ensure a stable supply of manpower for farms.
Previously, Gochang-gun is engaged in
all-out warfare to resolve the labor shortage in rural areas caused by
COVID-19.
In the Gochang-gun Office, a team
dedicated to managing foreign seasonal workers was established, and business
agreements were signed with local governments in Vietnam and Nepal to introduce
the foreign seasonal worker program one after another to secure manpower.
In addition, Gochang-gun has formed a
rural manpower countermeasure team and is promoting various projects to
alleviate the manpower shortage, such as support for the operation of the rural
employment manpower center, housing support project for foreign workers, and
helping hands in rural areas.
The mayor of Gochang said, “It is expected
that it will be of great help in securing manpower in rural areas through
various projects such as the construction of dormitories and business
agreements for seasonal worker programs. We will focus on promoting projects to
secure rural manpower," he said.
