From 2023, the Chungcheongbuk-do Office of Education has decided to operate a special Korean language class at high schools for immigrants from immigrant background and foreign students.
Currently, only elementary and middle schools are operating Korean language classes for students from immigrant backgrounds. For this reason, young people who have just arrived in Korea or who have not learned enough Korean are having a lot of difficulty after entering high school.
Accordingly, the Chungcheongbuk-do Office of Education is planning to install Korean language classes starting next year in high schools in Cheongju (2-3), Jincheon (1), and Eumseong (1-2) where many immigrants live.
Measures have also been taken to support youths from immigrant backgrounds who want to transfer or enter the school so that they can enter the school without difficulty.
Originally, Korean high schools have a quota, so if the quota is full, additional students cannot transfer or enroll.
Therefore, the Chungcheongbuk-do Office of Education shall accept students from other immigrant backgrounds in addition to the quota at high schools where Korean classes are installed within a limit of 10 students.
These details will be announced to parents and teachers at the ‘2023 Chungcheongbuk-do High School Admissions Implementation Plan Regional Briefing’, which will be held from September 26 to October 18.
This briefing session is intended to guide the detailed plan of the basic plan for high school admissions for the 2023 school year, which was implemented in May, △ Overview of admissions process (application management, test qualifications, application procedures, etc.) △ Calculation of academic records △selection method and schedule for each application qualification, △how to assign a standardized high school, etc.
An official from the Chungcheongbuk-do Office of Education said, “The Office of Education has decided to preemptively build a Korean language education infrastructure for students who are having difficulties due to the lack of Korean language classes in high schools. We will look at the situation of the Korean language class and expand it in the future.”
