The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family announced that it would strengthen bilingual learning support operated by family centers nationwide so that children and adolescents from multicultural families can grow into global talents by utilizing their strengths as multicultural families.

Bilingual education recognizes the ability to speak two or more languages as a cultural strength, and fosters language skills through education at home, school, and society. If your child is good at speaking the mother's language, such as Chinese or Vietnamese, in addition to Korean, he or she will be greatly recognized at school.

What do you teach at the family center?

*Existing education: Since 2014, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family has been promoting a project to create a bilingual family environment so that children from multicultural families can naturally learn bilingualism from infancy and develop bilingual skills.

This project consists of Bilingual Parent Guidance (Coaching) Parent-Child Interaction Program Bilingual Utilization Program.

*New education: The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family plans to raise children from multicultural families to become “bilinguals” by operating bilingual education programs at family centers across the country starting this year.

In particular, reflecting the demand of multicultural families who prefer direct bilingual education, we decided to operate customized bilingual classes for multicultural children and teenagers under the age of 12 by level.

In response, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family distributed the “Guidelines for Bilingual Class Management” to family centers across the country in July, which includes teaching methods and class guidance that can be used for bilingual education.

What's good about being bilingual?

*Proud of my identity: Choi Seo-yoon (22 years old, university student), who

received the grand prize at the national bilingual competition by learning bilingually at the family center, emphasized, “I was always proud of being a child of a multicultural family because I was able to speak bilingually.

She continued, “I think understanding the culture and language of both mother and father countries together is my identity and competitiveness.”

*It would have been nice if I had learned bilingualism: Mi-rae Kim (22 years old, college student) said, "I grew up receiving visiting education and Korean language education at the Multicultural Family Support Center, but I never thought of learning the language of my mother's country separately." “Now that I am a college student, thinking about it, I regret that if I had learned Chinese as a child, I would have had the ability to speak bilingually by now,” she regretted.

Being able to speak one more language besides Korean means that there are more opportunities to choose. We actively support our children so that they can develop bilingual strengths and grow into talented people in our society. If you don't prepare now, you will probably regret it later.
